Responses of sustained ganglion cells were recorded extracellulary in superficial layers of the tectum opticum of
Carassius gibelio. Receptive fields were mapped w ith contrast spots flic kering sequentially in different places of
stimulation area (random checkerboard canonical method). The length, width and orientation of the excitatory receptive
field were evaluated according to the two-dimensional equivalent of the standard deviation for this data set. Estimated
mean of the excitatory receptive field sizes of the sustained ganglion cells in the fish retina is approximately 4.5o
which is almost identical to previously measured receptive fields of the direction selective ganglion cells for the same
species. We can also state that generally receptive fields of the sustained ganglion cells are oriented horizontally
which can evidence for the pattern of their mosaic.
