Behavioral and hormonal responses of “griseus” males (Chinese hamster) to urine odor of con- and heterospecific (“pseudogriseus” – Transbaikalian hamster) females in different stages of estrous cycle were analyzed. In behavioral tests Chinese hamster males significantly (p<0.05) preferred conspecific diestrous female urine and this result was confirmed by the hormonal response. Testosterone concentration was significantly increased (p<0.05) to diestrous urine exposure of conspecific females only. However, when estrous urine was presented, testosterone concentration was raised significantly (p<0.05) to both chromosomal forms. Interestingly that cortisol level was increased only to heterospecific urine odor and in either phases of physiological cycles of females. Obtained behavioral and hormonal differences complete our recent studies and testify for initial stages of precopulatory isolation mechanisms between explored forms of striped hamsters.
