The excitatory glycine receptor (eGlyR) performs a neuroprotective function in central nervous system neurons. eGlyR is
localized in the apical regions of olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs). Its main distinguishing feature is selective
activation by glycine molecules, as well as its low permeability to calcium ions. However, the functional role of this
receptor in olfactory receptor cells has not been sufficiently studied. Therefore, the aim of this study was to
investigate whether glycine affects the olfactory sensitivity of OSNs. To achieve this goal, in vivo calcium
fluorescence microscopy was used to record fluorescence changes in response to stimulation in the presence and absence
of glycine. The obtained data allow us to assert that glycine affects the olfactory sensitivity of OSNs. Moreover, the
responses of the receptor cells varied differently: in some, they were enhanced, while in others, they were weakened, up
to complete disappearance. It is likely that such responses are due to the different sensitivities of olfactory sensory
neurons to odors. Thus, glycine, via activation of the excitatory glycine receptor, can influence the olfactory
sensitivity of sensory neurons.
