The speech signal detection under the background of spatially distributed multi-speaker noise was studied with different
sensory and non-sensory individual characteristics of 30 adult listeners with normal hearing aged 21–45 years (15 men,
15 women). Listening was performed in an anechoic noise-attenuated chamber with the speech source located frontally at a
distance of 1 m from the listener and with spatially distributed multi-speaker noise. The signal level (individual words
pronounced by different speakers) at the listening position was equal to 50 dB (SPL), the signal-to-noise ratio was –5,
–8, –11 and –14 dB. The analysis of the signal detection probability was performed by auditory (sensory) factors –
indicators of interaural difference in hearing acuity for speech frequencies range, lateral preference in speech
perception; and by non-sensory factors – individual characteristics (level of extroversion and neuroticism, field-
dependence). Significant relationships were found between sensory factors (Spearman's rank correlation) and the
probability of speech signal detection in the most masking listening situation (signal-to-noise ratio: –14 dB). Non-
sensory factors, other than field-dependence, emerged only at lower noise intensities. The possible nature of the
observed relationships and their practical implications for improving the noise tolerance of speech perception in
complex communication situations are discussed.
